Course Structure

Courses are conducted at four different levels.  Each level builds on the language skills already acquired from school/university or work experience – or from the skills taught at the previous level.  At every level the course carefully combines listening and speaking skills and methodically integrates core grammar and vocabulary required for everyday communication.  This is done by focusing mainly on functional and situational language. Attention is also given at all levels to improving pronunciation, including stress and intonation.

Topics

These can vary, depending on the needs of the individual students within the group, but usually include greetings, asking for and giving personal information, directions, instructions, telephone language, requesting, offering, agreeing & disagreeing, suggesting etc. and are taught contextually in situations where students are most likely to meet and need such language. At levels 3 & 4 there is increased focus on using this language in a business or commercial context.

Note:    All the activities in these courses are designed to build student confidence in terms of using the language taught or already known and, as such, require a high level of student participation.  Many of the activities involve students working with each other to practice the language taught so that their fluency in the language is increased.  Every effort is made to ensure that the class atmosphere is relaxed yet purposeful and students are encouraged to try out and practice their language without fear of making mistakes.  The purpose of the courses is to help people communicate.

Levels

The four course levels currently offered are as follows: (A test is conducted on the students to assess their proficiency level)

Level 1  – Beginner

Level 2  – Elementary

Level 3  – Post-elementary

Level 4  – Intermediate

A level zero class (literacy) may also be run, depending on numbers, for students who have little or no knowledge of either spoken or written English.
